week in pictures- countryside

I took the train to my friends place in the country, to help out during a difficult time. It was good to see my friends again, enjoy the sunshine and hang out with the animals, but I wish it was not for so sad a reason. My thoughts are with them as they adjust to life after so much grief.

on an island

I caught a train and then another, then a ferry. We lazed on the beach, played ukulele and had a picnic, but it was too cold to swim. I met his sisters and their husbands and kidlets too, who were all super nice. We made pizza. We did magic tricks. We went for a beautiful walk in the morning and held hands a lot. Then we caught the ferry home again, and I caught a train and he caught a plane.

Thanks to the couple who chose the lovely island to get married on, and invited the family. Thanks to the family for inviting me over for the day too. I had a lovely time on an island with my squeeze.

50% Danish, 100% excited

I like being half Danish. I like boiled eggs in my tomato soup. Danish architecture and design give me a vague sense of (probably misplaced) pride. I am happy to be connected to the 'happiest country' in the world. I like bicycles, icecream, cottages, liquorice, vikings, fairy tales and plastic building blocks; all areas in which the Danish excel.

In one month, four peasly little weeks, I will be joining my family (7 + 1 bub) as we travel across the world and meet up with more, far-flung family. I am excited, and nervous, and happy and worried all at the same time. I have never been so far away!

things I want to do in Denmark

:: fill a travel journal, a camera and my suitcase
:: go to the original
lego land
:: ride a bike. everywhere. look as chic as these people while doing so.
:: smile at all the tall men. ALL of the TALL men.
:: visit the little mermaid statue
:: see Iron and Wine play. buy a tour t-shirt.
:: send a ridiculous number of postcards
:: look at castles. Maybe Princess Mary's too.
:: soaking up the eco/sustainable/vintage/chic culture. they have lots.
:: eat a lot of Danish liquorice
:: See some deer and other animals-I-have-never-seen
:: go to a Viking Museum

that's all I have so far.
Have you been? Do you have any suggestions?

my trip in pictures

I love Brisbane. Look at these bikes around the city! What an ace idea.

Coffee and Chai with my twin sister the morning after arriving.

Every time I walked past this building, it made me think of my friend Ro.

I met up with an old school friend. We used to sneak cigerettes in the cubby. How naughty. There were pigeons there. (in the cafe. Not the cubby)

My niece Elsa's toes. (I didn't think she could get cuter, but then WHAM). She has just started walking too!

Oh noodle soup. How I missed you. I had it twice, and sushi too.

My niece Rachael's birthday party in the park, dinosaur and fairy theme. See that cake? With the lake and the dinos? Told you my Sis could throw a party (remember this one?)

I caught buses and trains, and bought a street directory. I ate out, caught up, stayed in. I went to job interviews, and on a date too. They sound funny in the same sentence, but there you go. I thought and wondered and explored.

I think I'm ready.

Christmas 2010- a list

I arrived on the late train and we went late-night Christmas shopping and we hit a bunny and a fox on the way home. I know.

My sister made up my bed all cute with a little owl and vintage sheets.

We went to the Storytree, that's my cute niece Elsa.
We played on the trampoline and swings and mum was hit in the eye with a tennis ball.
Christmas lunch was delicious, and delicious, and yum.
We told each other jokes and laughed a lot
It rained a lot too.
We had breakfast involving pancakes and bacon and syrup. Twice.
My sister makes really good cake. Christmas Cake. Brandy Christmas Cake. With icing.
We played video games and that new one that uses your body as the controller.
And regular board games too.
Some people drank margaritas. Some people drank bourbon. Some people drank juice.
We listened to Flight of the Conchords and some people did the robot dance.
We drove around and looked at the Christmas lights
and had a family trip to Ikea
and also Sizzler.
We almost got stuck when it rained so much the roads were closed
but we weren't.
At my twin sisters place we watched Sherlock Holmes and ate popcorn
and she made me the most gosh darn delicious baked potato I've ever had.
My big sister picked me up and we spent the next night playing cards, doing our nails
and watching old episodes of Friends.
In the morning I got the train and my other sister picked me up
and we went op-shopping.
I bought this crocheted blanket (which I love), an antique globe
and a salt and pepper shaker shaped like a mouse.
Then my mum and I drove to the property and in the morning I had billy tea.

Now I am home. Phew.
I feel a bit like Dorothy. I've been looking for something and just realised I had it all along.

The Boy and I broke up last week, but life doesn't give much of a toss about your heart. It blithely goes on, regardless of the state of your insides. I still wake up in the morning, there is still laundry to do, emails to answer, cats to feed, projects to start. The sun comes up and goes down, and it's getting easier to breathe.

Friends invited me to stay with them in the country, and here I am. Each day I 'm surrounded by new scenery, with new sounds and new smells. It feels a little surreal, as it all happened so quickly, and I'm still very sad, but it's nice to be somewhere else.

I'll give you a tour soon x

some photos and a lot of juice

So when I arrived in Orange, Mum had set up the converted bus into my very own personal health retreat. Spoiled, non? These are just some of the veges that Mum juiced over the 4 days. A lot of juice. And herbal tea, and garlic and ginger too.

Beeswax candles for my detox spa baths, skin brushing and saunas.

I went for a bush walk on the 2nd day to see the waterfall, and ended up completely lost. Utterly. My sense of direction took a nap but eventually I found a road, followed it, and had explain a bit red-faced to a local to get the directions back again. While I was wandering aimlessly, I did see a kangaroo, a wallaby, a giant goanna and about a gazillion gum trees that all looked the same (I blame them).

It snowed! Truely! One morning I woke up early to minus 5 degrees, and snowing! I was mega excited as I haven't actually seen snow before, so I rugged up and walked around and caught some snowflakes on my tongue. Exciting. (and yes I look a bit ridonkulous, I am wearing every shirt and jumper and coat I had)

After the snow came the rain. Lots of it. The photo above was on my first walk to the waterfall, at the point I crossed the river to get to the other side. The one below was on the last day, when the river was swollen with rain and roaring down the valley. No crossing that day.

Mum climbed further up and turned to take this photo of me looking contemplative. I refused to watch her climb, it makes me incredibly nervous to see someone climb up steep things.
I came back rested and feeling so much better. Thanks Mum!
You can see more about what amazing stuff Mum does in her Natural Health Clinic by following this link, I highly recommend!
